'In 1985 I purchased this fascinating book about the Medal of Honor and its history and over the years I have re-read it many times because of the fascinating story and history of the brave men (and 1 woman) who was awarded America's highest medal for bravery in combat. This book begins with the story of how the medal was created during the Civil War for heroics of men who were in battle and went 'above and beyond' the call of duty for their heroics. The medal has been awarded since the Civil War to a few thousand men who either died in their actions or were awarded the medal immediately after their heroics or years later after their heroic deed. In peacetime up to the early 1930's the medal was also awarded to men who did great feats during peacetime such as Admiral Byrd, and three navy divers who rescued sailors from a submarine that sunk to the Ocean Floor. The history of the medal and men continue from World War I, World War II, the 'banana wars', Korea, and as this was published in 1985 the latest war Vietnam. There are individual stories of men and what they did to get the Medal, story of how Hollywood made movies based on heroic actions of Medal of Honor winners such as 'Sergeant York' and 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo'. Side stories are also told about how the men felt after receiving the Medal are told in a fascinating read. In the back of the book are the lists of the men who received the Medal of Honor and the location where they 'won' the Medal also what war they were in. This is an outstanding book with a fascinating read that is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone interested in US Military History, the History of the Medal of Honor, and great stories of valor!' -- Joe Owen.
