"Sometimes irreverent, always irrepressible - whether in print or on camera - Denis Beckett has never been known to shy away from the real issues of the day, no matter how controversial. Astonishing ratings proved the popularity of Beckett's Trek, the television series which saw Denis roaming the length and breadth of South Africa in an endeavor to capture the spirit and scope of its citizens and the country they live in. It saw Denis, among other things, being put into prison, driving a minibus taxi, flying an air force jet and arguing with ministers. Sometimes the most interesting asides and real opinions from the people he interviewed had to end up on the cutting room floor. Trekking picks them up, dusts them off and shows us what really happened off camera, together with Beckett's inimitable no-holds-barred commentary (with selected tangents) on the state of the nation.".

The positive message was welcomed by countless South Africans looking for a silver lining in the storm clouds of 2008. "Sam Jameson was eight years old when his father George died in shocking circumstances. He decides, some forty years later, to finally open the box of his father's papers which his mother had passed on to him, and he left sealed for two decades. In trying to piece together a picture of his unknown father, Sam discovers a troubled, doomed, but extraordinary man - and an extraordinary story. George was a Native Commissioner in the old South Africa, deeply unsure of the morality of his work, but unable to escape it. The backdrop is the lush and harsh landscape of South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s, in the early years of apartheid . ".

"Born in Soweto is the human story of black South Africa. It is a complex fusion of suffering and resilience, tragedy, humour and undiminished spirit. Above all, it is a moving and poignant tribute to the ordinary people of a city that has become both famous and infamous - people who have managed to keep hope alive, who remain deeply creative and enterprising, and who have made meaning of their daily struggle to survive.".

"The Heart in Exile is an important new collection of South African poetry which will have wide appeal. Its unique relevance derives partly from the fact that it is positioned squarely in the transition years of 1990-1995, when the country literally changed its face. But the collection also signals a new suppleness in South African English poetry. Although poets have continued, in these years, to register a sense of their own exile - and that of their fellow South Africans - from a kinder and more benevolent land in which to live, their passionate involvement with the country, its land and its people, has found a new sense of receptivity: a greater community of shared feeling in the wake of South Africa's transition.".

175 x 110 mm; laminated pictorial wraps; pp. (vi) + 245. Cover very slightly rubbed; regular, light browning internally. Very good condition. The book of the SABC 3 series, based on original works by Alan Paton. "In 1935 Alan Paton and his wife Dorrie arrived at the doors of the Diepkloof Reformatory for black boys outside Johannesburg where Paton was to take up the position of principal. Until then Diepkloof had operated within a system of fear and deprivation and the new principal's methods of rehabilitation were revolutionary for the time. The challenge produced both triumphs and bitter disappointments, not only professionally but in his personal life as well, when an affair with a woman ten years his junior threatened to break up his marriage. His thirteen years at Diepkloof were a seminal period in Paton's life. The experience led to his writing the great South African novel Cry, the Beloved Country.".

"In exploring ghost stories as urban legends, Goldstuck makes a fascinating discovery: the ghostly beliefs of each culture in South Africa have had a profound impact on the supernatural beliefs of every other cultural group in the country over the past four centuries. The result is the story of the South African ghost: a unique and complex character that reflects a turbulent history and a harsh existence and sheds a fascinating light on the nature of supernatural experience throughout the world.".

"Ignoring advice from his white friends, and to the bemusement of his black friends, Steven Otter throws caution to the wind and moves into Khayelitsha, a black township outside Cape Town. The story of his experiences in the uneven spread of shacks and informal housing that are home to more than a million people provides an unusual perspective on, and insight into, a predominantly Xhosa community and their reaction to an umlungu in their midst. Steven comes to understand his identity as a South African, the true meaning of community and brotherhood, and that some tsotsis are not what they seem. He finds that his preconceived notions of culture and race are called into question and that ubuntu, community and a sense of humour may still thrive alongside poverty and crime.".

The last novel by the celebrated Afrikaans author, published shortly after her death: a magazine article covering an interview with the author two weeks before her death, and dealing with this novel, is loosely inserted. "Moses Swart, skaapwagter van die Bredasdorpse Strandveld, voel sy hele lewe lank nog dat hy nie hoort in hierdie land van see- en veldmense nie. Hy is 'n uitgespoelde, maar waar kom dié knaende gevoel van 'n ander identiteit vandaan? Totdat hy Lord en Lady van Springfield ontmoet en dadelik besef: hulle is ook uitgespoeldes, soos hy.".
