Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Fabricating the Body: Effects of Obligation and Exchange in Contemporary Discourse is comprised of nine chapters that revolve around the body, and more specifically, issues related to identity. The text draws on a variety of criticism-including disability, gender, and psychoanalytic studies-to theorize aspects relevant to the human body historically. For example, Rachel Herzl-Betz's A Paratactic 'Missing Link': Dorian Gray and the Performance of Embodied Modernity uses disability studies as a lens through which to examine Oscar Wilde's literary debt to the atavistic discourse of late-Victorian freak shows. Moving forward in time, Melissa Ames's chapter, Bodies of Debt: Interrogating the Costs of Technological Progress, Scientific Advancement, and Social Conquests through Dystopian Literature is a pedagogy-focused chapter. In the chapter, Ames discusses a college course in which she asked students to consider contemporary debates, such as cloning, stem cell research, human trafficking, and so forth, in tandem with fictional texts that relate these issues. Ultimately, the class wrestled with the question of: what do we do when human survival and societal progress come at extreme costs? As a whole, the text works to stimulate conversations surrounding the body, and specifically, bodies that can be labeled indebted. Fabricating the Body brings together issues of gender, class, and identity, and investigates ethical concerns along with topics related to marginalization and the mind/body split. Ultimately, the text situates the body as a productive space for academic research. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Social policy, as executed in western civilization, is apparently at a crossroads, with forgotten contradictions between the rich and the poor having once again become topical. The current economic and social crisis, including the crisis of the welfare state, raises the need to seek solutions from the past as well as the present. This volume brings together examples of social practice in the Central European region from the 19th century to the 1950s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. During the last century, writers as diverse as William Golding, Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, and Laurie Lee, were captivated by Greece. They were joined in their production of travel accounts by hundreds of lesser-known authors. This book exposes how the responses of travellers were conditioned by much more than their own opinions and personalities. The British education system, classical scholarship, and the heroism demonstrated by the Greeks during the Nazi invasion of their country, all contributed to shaping travel narratives. The author analyses the way in which all of the major archaeological sites were described-including the Athenian Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia, Heinrich Schliemann's Mycenae, and Sir Arthur Evans' Knossos in Crete. The representation of the modern Greek people, particularly in the period after the Second World War, is also explored at length. Viewed as relics of the past, the Greeks in literature were given the qualities and appearance of their ancestors. David Wills shows how in the hands of twentieth century travel writers, Greece became less a modern country, and more a mirror of antiquity. This book is essential reading for all who are interested in the history of travel and tourism, reception of the classical past, and recent Greek history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. As featured on the Antiques Roadshow, the work of Timothy Corsellis is made available here, for the first time, in a collected edition. One hundred poems have been chosen and arranged in such a way as to bring out the unique literary and historical interest of the short life and long work of this unusual war poet. They have been grouped in roughly chronological order in six chapters, each accompanied by a thematic introduction which places them in the social and intellectual contexts from which they sprung: the Munich crisis and the search for other ideas of a Christian society, the fall of France and the possibility of a Federal Union, days in the East End and nights in Chelsea during and after the Blitz, life and death in the air. The poems do not only tell a personal tale; they also tell a political one. Interwoven with the biography of a gifted poet whose life and work were cut tragically short by his wartime death, are two even more striking stories. The first is the historical account of an RAF-trained pilot who, in January 1941, at the height of the Blitz, refused to become a bomber-pilot because it would mean the bombing of civilians. The second is the literary story of the connections between Timothy Corsellis and Stephen Spender, their actual encounter in September 1941 and its enduring consequences. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
