"Here is all the information the novice harpsichord maker needs to build an instrument that meets his or her specifications as to compass, scale, and size. Step-by-step, this definitive work clearly spells out the myriad of details essential to creating a harpsichord that encompasses the appropriate range, produces desired sound quality and necessary volume, and is both an object of beauty and easy to play. The thorough description of the structure of the harpsichord and its basic elements gives full attention to the physical properties of strings, the string scale, the number of choirs, calculating string length, and developing a string plan. The keyboard, jacks, soundboard, wrest plank, and harpsichord case are also covered in meticulous detail. The reader will find down-to-earth guidance on every phase of the design process, from a discussion of the drafting instruments and spacing gauges needed to precise explanations for drawing plans for each part of the harpsichord - in the exact order required. You will also discover how to break down the complex construction process into a series of smaller, simpler steps.how to select the optiumum building material for each component of the instrument.how to laminate the bent side.how to achieve proper key touch.how to test mechanisms before installation. Here, too, are the specialized construction tools you need, exact instructions for fitting all the parts together, and numerous illustrations and tables covering such essential details as the properties of music wire, Mersenne's multipliers, fraction and decimal equivalents, and drill and lead hole sizes."
