Soft Cover. Condición: Near Fine. Cover painting: "Baker Street" by John Sutton Ilustrador. 1st UK Edition 1st Printing. -----Tight square and clean, large soft cover, flat uncreased spine, 277 pages. "More than a century has passed since Arthur Conan Doyle introduced Sherlock Holmes to the reading public, but no literary detective has yet to match the Geat Detective in popularity and to command the esteem of such legions of fans - not least among them the mystery writers who pay tribute to him in this collection. Ingeniously contrived and shrewdly executed, their tales revisit the comfortable clutter of the rooms at 221B Baker Street where Holmes in an old silk dressing gown, his gaze piercing and his fingers stained with chemials or ink, again peruses a telling trifle or perhaps takes up his violin." Contents include: Intro by Daniel Stashower / The Man from Capetown by Stuart M. Kaminsky / The Case of the Borderland Dandelions by Howard Engel / The Siren of Sennen Cove by Peter Tremayne / The Case of the Bloodless Sock by Anne Perry / The Adventure of the Anonymous Author by Edward D. Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. London. The British Library Publishing Division. 2012. First Edition. No edition remarks. Hard Cover. Post 4to 10" x 8" [25.4cm x 20cm] approx. 368 pp. Black boards with gilt titles to the spine. Endpapers decorated with facsimile reproductions of tide tables. Edited by Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower. Map and frontispiece in prelims. A beautifully produced book containing many line drawings and photographs as well as facsimile sepia reproductions of Conan Doyle's diary. Both book and jacket are as new. Front panel is Conan Doyle's own diary drawing of SS Hope in 1880. The rear panel also shows the SS Hope leaving Peterhead in 1880. In 1880 a young medical student named Arthur Conan Doyle embarked upon the first real outstanding adventure of his life, taking a berth as ship s surgeon on an Arctic whaler, the Hope. The voyage took him to unknown regions, showered him with dramatic and unexpected experiences, and plunged him into dangerous work on the ice floes of the Arctic seas. Conan Doyle s time in the Arctic provided powerful fuel for his growing ambitions as a writer. With a ghost story set in the Arctic wastes that he wrote shortly after his return, he established himself as a promising young writer. Out of sight for more than a century was a diary that Conan Doyle kept while aboard the whaler. Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure makes this account available for the first time in a beautiful facsimile edition that reproduces Conan Doyle s notebook pages in his own elegant hand, accompanied by his copious illustrations. In addition to the facsimile and annotated transcript of the diary, the volume contains photographs of the Hope, its captain, and a young Conan Doyle on deck with its officers; two nonfiction pieces by Doyle about his experiences; and two of his tales inspired by the journey. The jacket will be covered with an inert archival protective sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional photographs.
