Paperback. Condición: VG. Listening to my father's music is the next best thing to getting a hug from him. It's a beautiful, bittersweet experience" It seems as if the further away we pull from the 20th century, the better Leonard Bernstein's music sounds. Now that we're in his 90th birthday year, the appreciation seems to be increasing exponentially. From a daughter's point of view, this is a gratifying thing, of course. Yet it poses a conundrum: the more people celebrate my father s legacy, the harder it is for me to find a private way to remember him. In New York City, this conundrum is at its keenest. This is the city where Leonard Bernstein spent most of his life and where my siblings and I grew up. New Yorkers are fiercely possessive of their Lenny. Not only did he conduct their estimable orchestra for all those years, but no fewer than three of his Broadway shows (On the Town, Wonderful Town and West Side Story) plus one film score (On the Waterfront) directly illustrate the city through music. He is as closely associated in his way with New York City as Dickens is with London, or Toulouse Lautrec with Paris. Although we can certainly wax convivial talking about music afterwards with friends, actually listening to music is a private, inner sort of experience. That's why I'm grateful that so much of my father's music will be played this fall at the festival in New York jointly presented by Carnegie Hall and the New York Philharmonic. So much of my father is in his notes! The smorgasbord of Bernstein works this fall gives me an ideal chance to revisit some of my favorites, like Mass or Serenade, as well as to hear works I know less well or haven't heard in a long time, like Concerto for Orchestra. When I listen to his music superbly played - as it undoubtedly will be this fall - I can allow the notes to envelop me and carry me through all the multi-hued chambers of my memories. It's a beautiful, bittersweet experience and I can't wait. Listening to my father's music is the next best thine to eettine a hue from him. Conundrum solved.
