"Honorà de Balzac thought so highly of Brillat-Savarin as an author that he wrote an elaborage appendix to the second edition (1838) of the 'Physiology'. Here offered a nicely printed early 20th C edition of this classic in the genre. VG (bumped lower tips)/Good (chipping to edges & extremities/small pieces missing from lower spine panel, which is darkened). Black cloth binding. Printed green paper dust jacket 1st edition thus, i.e., by this Publisher, who draws from the 1884 Nimmo & Bain edition, which was advertised as the 1st complete English translation.

Octavo, in a fine Swedish binding (very much in the French style) by G. F. Possman of Stockholm in 1877, in quarter-morocco over marbled papered boards (panels with a couple of very light marks), spine in compartments with gilt ruling and ornamentation, contrasting red morocco title label lettered in gilt, vellum tipped corners; Possmann's bookbinding label to verso of front free endpaper with his note that the design of the binding was created by the librarian and writer Christoffer Eichhorn; marbled endpapers with the armorial bookplate of Christoffer Eichhorn (1837-1889) to front pastedown, pp. [iv]; 455, internally crisp with some pale foxing, a fine copy. Loosely enclosed, is a contemporary photograph of a statue erected in honour of Christoffer Eichhorn. Brillat-Savarin'sPhysiologie du goutwas first published in Paris in 1825 and has not been out of print since. The lifework of gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the book describes 'the science of cooking and the art of eating' in a way which elevates the functionality of food to the art of cuisine. This early edition is exquisitely bound to order by Swedish bookbinder Possman for bibliophile Eichorn.

Lechêne s'est chargé sur l'indication de notre ami Carnot». Il l'invite à entendre Lechêne qui lui en exposera les termes. «Vous verrez que cette affaire est de nature à être terminée à l'amiable et par l'entremise d'un conseil de famille que je crois au surplus parfaitement disposé, vous serez maître de faire à cet égard tout ce qui vous plaira, et sûr de l'approbation des principaux intéressés qui par eux mêmes méritent tout intérêt. Faites cela pour moi, mon cher législateur, et je vous en remercierai bientôt, car on dit que vous allez être rassemblés vers le 15 juillet pour le budget et l'organisation de la justice [.]». Letter to Alexandre Delessert, of whom Brillat-Savarin writes in his Physiologie du Goût: My friend Alexandre Delessert was the first to bring into general usage the charming practice of chilling and blending Madeira wine with strawberry and pineapple juices." Brillat-Savarin begins his letter with a rhyming quatrain comparing himself to the phoenix reborn from the ashes and announcing his return to Paris and his friend Delessert. He continues (translated): despite what people say about the countryside in autumn a few privileged souls feel how sweet it is to be on the fields of one s forefathers, arranging for beautifications, ordering repairs made, surrounded by one s family, consuming food that one has raised oneself, making the rounds of one s properties, and in a word to be at home [written in English] .I announce to you in the joy of my soul that my brother has just been made a Major in the 28 Infantry Battle Regiment Still waiting for me here are four grand dinners, two balls, plus a celebration in Macon and if I don t die either from fatigue or of indigestion, I might well finally arrive with a new servant at my house in the rue St. Thomas.".
