On the eve of a boy's Bar Mitzvah, he learns about life from an old man whose antique watch reveals something of man's relation to God. With images based on watch mechanisms which evoke the mysteries and allusions of the story, this brief tale by David Mamet moves in a mysterious journey from the intricacies of watchmaking to allusions to the horrors of the holocaust, as the old man shares his understanding of life's struggles and what it means to be a good jew. Contemporary artist Donald Sultan's striking images provide a counterpoint to the story, as gilded clocks and elaborate timepieces yield to blank watch faces, barbed wire, empty windows and stark architectural renderings.
