Summary: The Museum of London first opened its doors to the public in 1976, in brand new purpose-built galleries at London Wall. Its wonderful collections illustrating the history of London were formed by the amalgamation of the Guildhall Museum and the London Museum. This book tells the story of these so dissimilar yet complementary institutions, now (to quote the words of Queen Elizabeth II) "happily and respectably married" to form the Museum of London. The Guildhall Museum, established in 1826 by the Corporation of London, was one of the oldest museums in the country specializing in the collection of antiquities, chiefly archaeological, relating to the small area of the City itself. In 1911, however, a pushy rival appeared, the London Museum, which concerned itself with the whole of London and with its history in all periods. It was set up under powerful aristocratic auspices, supported by royal patronage and privately financed in some mysterious and hitherto unexplained way.
